Why Fit-Up Matters

Laser welding depends on consistent fit-up

Laser welding places a narrow, concentrated weld along the joint, so the joint has to be presented consistently. Gaps that vary from part to part, contaminated surfaces or parts that move during welding all change the result.

For that reason, we review the joint and the way the part will be held before quoting, and we design tooling where the component needs it.

Laser welding questions

What components are suitable for laser welding?
Suitability depends on the material, joint design, fit-up, weld access and the weld requirements for the part. We review each drawing package and tell you whether laser welding, robotic MIG welding or manual welding is the better route.
Can RWS laser weld stainless steel?
Stainless-steel components are reviewed for laser welding based on grade, thickness, joint design, fit-up and appearance requirements. Stainless work is also welded using our other in-house processes where those suit the part better.
Is laser welding suitable for prototypes?
Yes — sample or first-article parts can be produced and reviewed before any repeat production is released.
Does laser welding require dedicated tooling?
Consistent joint fit-up and stable part positioning are required, so many laser welding jobs use dedicated tooling. Weld fixtures and production tooling are designed and built in-house at RWS.
